Construction of the main building of the Akranes Folk Museum began in 1968 and the museum was officially open on the 4th of July 1974. Most of the museum's permanent exhibit is in this building.
At the Akranes Folk Museum, you can learn about the history of Akranes and its surroundings. The museum was founded and opened in the year 1959 and can be found at Garðaholt 3.
Akranes Folk Museum provides guests with a special insight into times gone by and guests will be hard-pressed to find such a comprehensive exhibit in Iceland. The museum's exhibits are varied and spread across a few different buildings, some of which have been moved especially to the museum site. The museum also boasts a unique cinematic space and performance space for temporary exhibits. In the permanent exhibit of the museum, you can learn about life at sea, on land, in work and play. Included in the ticket price is a guided tour via recording which gives further insight into the exhibits. The museum also has an area where Icelandic blacksmiths can come and work, which is open occasionally to guests. A trip to the Akranes Folk Museum will broaden any guest's mind and knowledge.
