Akranes Library was founded on the 6th of November 1864, originally as a book club. The library has wonderful facilities at Dalbraut 1 and shares its space with Akranes' district archives and the photograph archive. The library has a wide range of books, magazines, CDs, videos and other media. The library has wi-fi for those who bring their own devices but also provides computers and printers. The children's section is a cosy, popular place for families to visit. The library has two private collections; Haraldssafn and Björnssafn. The library also has a space where members can get a special entry card for use outside of normal opening hours.
Akranes Library hosts a diverse range of art exhibitions from local artists, local schools and more. Those interested in showing their art are asked to contact the library directly. The library also hosts other events such as meet the author nights, concerts and more.
